Setting the Steelheads Straight

When Steelheads players need a little straightening out, they know who to call?the team?s chiropractors, of course.The Steelheads have the best crack team in town. Dr. Corey Matthews and Dr. Tim Klena of the Idaho Chiropractic Group were part of the Steelheads family from day one. Back in 1997, the duo got involved with the team and it just stuck through the years. As former athletes themselves - Dr. Matthews played college golf and Dr. Klena played college football - they enjoyed the atmosphere of being around the athletes and the sports team. And, Dr. Matthews said, ?it was rewarding to know we were really helping the guys feel and perform better.?In the meantime, another aspiring chiropractor, who happened to be an athlete himself -former pro skier and North American World Cup skier - was living in Salt Lake City and working with the Utah Grizzlies hockey team. After deciding to make the move to the Boise area, Dr. Kraig Knotts contacted The Idaho Chiropractic Group and said both Dr. Matthews and Dr. Klena were ?kind enough and generous enough to take me on board and they quickly became my mentors.?Matthews and Klena found that juggling a growing business, families and 36 Steelheads home games can be grueling. So to ease the load, Knotts become more involved with the team. Knotts said that was great news for him. ?I was very interested in working with the Steelheads.?The Steelheads have a team of physicians who work together to give the athletes the best treatment possible. St. Luke?s Idaho Elks Rehabilition Services (S.L.I.E.R.S.) provides the Steelheads with an athletic trainer, Brad Jellis MS, ATC, CSCS, who travels with the team and works with players day in and day out. Knotts said Matthews and Klena have the final say in all chiropractic diagnosis treatments, and if the injury goes beyond their scope of treatment, the players see the team of physicians and surgeons at the Boise Orthopedic Clinic. Drs. Robert Walker, Jim Johnston, Darby Webb, and Chris Lawler specialize in sports medicine and have performed dozens of surgeries on Steelheads players over the years to get them back on their skates. The dentists, who have been with the Steelheads since the start, Dr. Lynn Blaisdell and Dr. Robert DiGrazia, play a key role in the medical team and Knotts said that everybody works together very well. ?I?m privileged to work with this great team of doctors. They?re a great group of people to know.?Knotts has since opened his own chiropractic practice in Eagle, called Sports and Spine Chiropractic, and keeps a very busy schedule, including taking care of the Boise Burn af2 team. But, he enjoys working with the athletes to keep them at their optimum performance level. He works not only on joints and muscles, but on a holistic system that involves nutrition and weight loss also. ?Ultimately, I?d like to be a Sports Chiropractic Physician and maybe work for a pro team one day,?
