Steelheads Swept From Post-Season After 2-1 Loss To Aces In Game Four

Mark Bomersback scored the Steelheads only goal in a 2-1 loss to the Aces in Game Four of the National Conference Quarter Finals, ending the Steelheads? Kelly Cup championship reign in front of 4,698 fans at Sullivan Arena on Sunday night.The Steelheads (0-4) loss means the Aces (4-0) advance to the National Conference Semi-Finals, as they await the winner of the Las Vegas Wranglers / Stockton Thunder series.Just 3:11 into the opening period, Bomersback gave the Steelheads their first lead of the series, batting a loose puck out of mid air and past Marek Schwarz (27 saves). On the play, defenseman Jeremy Scherlinck threw the puck from the left wing boards into the Aces? slot and the puck bounced off several bodies before Bomersback was able to net his first career playoff tally. Taggart Desmet and Scherlinck drew the assists.Late in the frame Aces? defenseman Ed Hill potted the tying goal, stuffing his own rebound behind Steve Silverthorn (21 saves) for his first of the playoffs. Matt Robinson and Cam Keith picked up the helpers.Through one period the game was even at one and the shots favored the Steelheads 13-8.The Aces took a 2-1 advantage at the 14:42 mark of the second stanza, registering their seventh goal by a defenseman in the series, when Matt Shasby fired a one-timer that glanced off Silverthorn and squeezed just underneath the crossbar for his second of the postseason. Kimbi Daniels and Keith grabbed the assists on the goal that came moments after a Steelheads? power play expired.After 40 minutes of play the shots were even at 20 apiece and the Aces led 2-1.There was no scoring in the third period, officially ending the Steelheads? defense of their Kelly Cup title. The final shots favored the Steelheads 28-23, as they out-shot the Aces in three of the four games. The visitors ended the series just one-for-25 on the power play, while the Aces scored five times with the man advantage over the four game series.The Steelheads? 2008-2009 season will begin in late October, 2008.
