LAST WEEK’S GAMES
Friday, October 23
Allen 4 – Idaho 3 (OT)
Idaho’s home opener provided a thrilling finish, just not in favor of the Steelheads. The teams traded goals in each period of regulation, with Idaho first grabbing the lead on a tally by Jaxon Fuder in the first period before Allen evened things up late in the frame. Then the Americans took a lead on a Riley Kidney goal before Lee Lapid responded for Idaho, with Dylan Gratton striking in the third period before Kidney scored again shortly after to send the game to overtime. In the extra frame, Kidney completed his hat trick and won the game for the Americans just 43 seconds into overtime.
Saturday, October 24
Allen 5 – Idaho 2
Saturday’s game was a more decisive win for Allen to sweep the weekend. Noel Nordh got free in front of the Steelheads' net early in the opening frame to give Allen a 1-0 edge, but Kale Howarth responded with a power play goal for Idaho three minutes later. The next three goals would all go to the Americans, though, as Sam Lipkin, Mathieu De St. Phalle, and Zackary Shantz (shorthanded) all scored leading into the early portion of the second period to give Allen a 4-1 edge. While Nick Portz tallied his first goal of the season in the middle frame to bring the Steelheads closer, Luke Mistelbacher sealed the Allen win later in the period as the Americans picked up the 5-2 triumph.

TEAM NOTES
BOUNCE BACK TIME
The Steelheads suffered two losses in their home opening series this past weekend, collecting just one out of a possible four points against the Allen Americans. The setbacks were Idaho’s first two losses on the season after sweeping New Mexico to start the year, and with two more games against Allen this weekend the Steelheads will look to dish out some losses to the Americans in what is their own home-opening weekend.
SPECIAL TEAMS SUCCESS
Idaho’s special teams units have excelled in the early portion of the season. The power play has chipped in greatly, scoring six goals in the first five games of the season, and sitting third in the ECHL at 30% (6/20). On the flip side, the penalty kill has given up little, with Idaho holding Allen to zero power play goals on 11 opportunities last weekend, and ranking T-8th in ECHL heading into this week’s games at 90.9% (20/22).
SHORTHANDED STEELIES
Idaho will be without some key players for this weekend’s action against Allen, testing the Steelheads’ depth early in the season. Goaltender Jake Barczewski will miss the weekend after suffering a lower body injury last Friday that forced him to leave mid-game. Defenseman Charlie Dodero received a two-game suspension for his actions in a mid-game altercation with Allen’s Luke Mistelbacher. Forwards Morgan Winters, Jaxon Fuder, and Grant Silianoff did not make the trip with Idaho and are out this week due to injury.
TRENDS
- Idaho’s power play is clicking at 30% (6/20) through five games.
- The Steelheads’ penalty kill is operating at 90.9% (20/22) to begin the year, with the Steelheads having killed off their last 15 penalties.
- The Steelheads have outscored their opponents 7-3 in second periods to begin the season.
