STEELHEADS POWER RANKINGS: Longest Active ECHL Point Streaks

This is the weekly edition of Idaho Steelheads Power Rankings, where we at IdahoSteelheads.com will see where the Steelheads and their players rank among the best of the best in the ECHL.

The Steelheads once again find themselves among the hottest teams in the ECHL! Idaho has points in eight straight games, matching their longest streak of the season heading into this weekend’s two-game series with the Rapid City Rush. But with an eight-game points streak, are the Steelheads actually the best team rolling right now in the league? Let’s take a look at the longest active points streaks and find out!*All Statistics current as of 3/8*

5) Elmira Jackals; Four-game points streak (4-0-0)

The Jackals are fighting to stay alive in the Eastern Conference playoff picture, and they’ve certainly helped themselves in that regard with four straight wins to maintain a hold on the number eight spot out east, now tied with seventh-place Reading. Their current points streak is desperately needed after the Jackals earned just one win in eight games during the two prior weeks. The Jackals broke their losing funk with back-to-back wins over the Wheeling Nailers, directly behind them in the standings, and then kept the momentum going with two victories over last-place Brampton this past weekend.

4) Missouri Mavericks; Six-game points streak (4-0-2)

The top team in the West comes in at number four on this list, with points in six straight games to climb within five points of the 100-point mark for the season. The Mavericks did drop a surprising shootout loss to the Wichita Thunder, coupled last week with an overtime loss to Fort Wayne, but in the longer stretch it is hard to argue with Missouri’s success.  Beyond their current six game points streak, the Mavericks are 10-1-2 in their last 13 games.

3) Colorado Eagles; Seven-game points streak (6-0-1)

As great as the Steelheads have been playing, don’t forget to keep an eye on the Colorado Eagles in the rear-view mirror. The red-hot Eagles are just seven points behind the Steelheads and with three games in hand. The Eagles shootout loss Sunday in Fort Wayne snapped a six-game winning streak but keeps their points streak alive. That streak includes wins in three brutally physical games with Alaska, a victory over the Allen Americans, and five out of six points from the Fort Wayne Komets. The Steelheads and Eagles meet four more times this season.

2) Cincinnati Cyclones; Seven-game points streak (6-0-1)

Just ahead of Colorado in the Western Conference, and mirroring their performance the last two weeks, is the Cincinnati Cyclones. The Cyclones have dropped just one game in the shootout to Indy in their last seven outings, sandwiched by wins over the Fuel, Quad City, Atlanta, Tulsa, and Evansville.  The Cyclones are pushing their way up the leader board in the west, 11-2-1 in their last 14 games. They’ll have a good opportunity to expand on that, with their next eight consecutive games against teams not currently in playoff position.

1) Idaho Steelheads; Eight-game points streak (6-0-2)

The first weekend of the Steelheads’ current eight-game points streak might have given Steelheads fans some cause for concern, with the team dropping an overtime contest tot eh Wichita Thunder and then going to overtime again with the Thunder the following night to pull out a 5-4 win. Since then it’s been an upward trajectory for the Steelheads, including a win over Tulsa, three out of four points against the Utah Grizzlies and the team’s recent sweep of the Alaska Aces. The eight-game points streak has also allowed the Steelheads to both regain the top spot in the West Division and extend that lead to four points over the Grizzlies. The Steelheads will play their next four games against the Rapid City Rush, starting with two at Rushmore Plaza Civic Center this weekend. The Steelheads are 3-3-1 against Rapid City this season.
