STEELHEADS POWER RANKINGS: TOP 5 GOALIES IN SHUTOUTS

This is the weekly edition of Idaho Steelheads Power Rankings, where we at IdahoSteelheads.com will see where the Steelheads and their players rank among the best of the best in the ECHL.

Jack Campbell recorded his third shutout of the season on Friday night and fourth in his ECHL career. Where does that rank on the Steelheads’ all-time regular season leader board? Let’s find out!

*All Statistics current as of 1/18*

5) Matt Climie; 4 shutouts in 42 games

Matt Climie has played over 320 professional games over the past nine seasons, including five in the NHL, but he got his first taste of pro success during his rookie season in Idaho. With the Steelheads during the 2008-09 season, Climie earned four shutouts in 42 games, including back-to-back shutout efforts on March 25th and 28th of that season. Climie went 27-12-1 that season and earned his first NHL call-up.His 2.30 goals-against average and .915 save percentage as a Steelhead both rank in the franchise’s all-time top-ten. Climie is currently playing with the Straubing Tigers in Germany. He has 20 career professional shutouts.

4) Richard Bachman; 4 shutouts in 35 games

Another NHLer that got off the ground in Idaho, Bachman made just 35 starts with the Steelheads during the 2009-2010 season. He certainly made the most of them, going 22-7-0 with four shutouts and being named to the ECHL All-Rookie Team. Bachman also recorded a shutout that same season with AHL Texas. He certainly could have had more than those four shutouts, holding opponents to just one goal an additional nine times. Bachman has played in over 250 pro games, including 43 NHL games. Bachman is with the AHL’s Utica Comets this season, and did make one NHL start this year with the Vancouver Canucks.

3) Jack Campbell; 4 shutouts in 16 games

When you’re holding your opponents scoreless 25 percent of the time, you’re doing something right. Jack Campbell has dominated ECHL competition while with Idaho over the past two seasons, and that remains the case this season. Three of Campbell’s four ECHL shutouts have come in his last seven appearances, a span in which he’s also won two games surrendering just one goal. Campbell earned back-to-back shutouts, both 1-0 wins, on January 2nd and January 8th. Campbell has two lengthy shutout streaks this season, one of 181:21 and another of 121:24.

2) Josh Robinson; 5 shutouts

Josh Robinson spent parts of two seasons with Idaho in 2012-13 and 2013-14, but all five of his Steelheads shutouts came in that 2012-13 rookie season. Four of Robinson’s five shutouts required the first-year goaltender to make more than 30 saves. None of those shutouts came in Robinson’s first 13 games, in which he went an impressive 11-0-2. Robinson is having another impressive run this season, currently riding a 16 game winning streak with the Missouri Mavericks that ties an ECHL record.

1) Steve Silverthorn; 10 shutouts

Steve Silverthorn has a pretty healthy lead atop the Steelheads’ shutout leaderboard with double the total of Josh Robinson. Silverthorn was a Steelhead for 121 games across three seasons between 2005 and 2008, with his best year coming in 2006-07. Silverthorn went 36-16-6 with five shutouts and, of course, a Kelly Cup.For good measure, Silverthorn tallied three shutouts in 22 playoff games that year. At one point during that season, Silverthorn had a shutout streak of 137:05. Silverthorn is now an Assistant Coach for Bentley University.
