Steelheads provide offensive onslaught; never look back

Las Vegas, NV- The Idaho Steelheads (6-5-2) silenced any doubts about their team?s ability to score goals with a 6-1 win over the Las Vegas Wranglers (4-6-1) in front of 4,422 fans at the Orleans Arena. Steve Gainey, who had two goals, two assists, and a plus-five rating in the game, opened the scoring in a game that never saw the Steelheads trail.Gainey?s first goal of the game was unassisted at 2:12 of the first period. Riley Weselowski?s first of the season gave the Steelheads a 2-0 lead when he scored at 15:57 of the first. Matt McKnight picked up the assist. The story did not change in the second period, as Ben Nelson scored his sixth at 0:47 on the power play, with assists going to Marty Flichel and Kory Scoran. Less than two minutes later, at 2:11, Gainey scored his second of the game; the assists went to Bryan McGregor and Kyle Radke, who earned his first ECHL point with the helper. Gainey was inches away from having four goals this evening, as he connected with a post and a crossbar in the first period. Matt Stephenson gave the Steelheads a 5-0 lead with his first of the season at 16:10 of the second period; the assists went to Gainey and Scoran. The third period saw a goal from each side: at 15:23, Scoran connected with McGregor on a bang-bang play that saw McGregor redirect Scoran?s pass over the shoulder of Wranglers? goalie John DeCaro, who played the third period in relief of starter Brent Krahn. Chris Ferraro scored the final goal of the hockey game on a shot that caught Steelheads? goalie Rejean Beauchemin out of position at 19:43. The goal was Ferraro?s sixth. With the win, Beauchemin improved his season record to 3-2-2. Krahn took the loss for Las Vegas, as his personal mark fell to 1-3-0 with the loss.
