BOISE, ID – The Idaho Steelheads (2-0-0-0) defeated the Tahoe Knight Monsters (0-2-0-0) 4-2 Sunday afternoon to round out the 2026 Preseason. The Steelheads begin the 2026-27 regular season on Friday in Albuquerque against the New Mexico Goatheads.
After no scoring in the opening period, the Steelheads broke the ice 6:59 into the middle frame as Jordan Steinmetz collected a rebound in the crease to beat goaltender Alex Tracy for a 1-0 Idaho lead. Just 58 seconds later, the lead doubled, as Kale Howarth put home another rebound to grab his first goal in a Steelheads uniform.
The Steelheads onslaught continued just three minutes later with Ty Pelton-Byce scoring from the left circle to grow the lead to 3-0 just over 10 minutes into the middle frame. Tahoe would get the last laugh of the period, however, as Sam Mayer found Jett Jones at the top of the crease, who deflected the puck by Idaho goaltender Jake Barczewski for Tahoe’s first tally.
In the third period, the Knight Monsters drew within one, as Keanan Stewart scored from in between the circles on a loose puck just four minutes into final frame.
The Steelheads would stand tall the rest of the way, however, and grab the game-sealing goal into an empty net from Nick Portz with just 1:03 remaining in regulation, as the Steelheads finished off their 4-2 win.
Idaho’s power play finished the game 0/3, while Tahoe finished 0/4.
Barczewski stopped 28 of 30 shots he faced in the win, while Tracy turned aside 38 of 41 shots he faced in the loss.
