Kenton Helgesen Returns for 2020-21 Season

BOISE, Idaho – Defenseman Kenton Helgesen has agreed to terms with the Idaho Steelheads for the 2020-21 season, Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Everett Sheen announced Thursday.

Helgesen, 26, played 4 games with the Steelheads during the 2019-20 season after being loaned to Idaho from the SPHL’s Evansville Thunderbolts. The 6-foot-3, 200-pound defenseman has played in 120 games in the ECHL tallying 11 goals, and 28 assists for 39 points. He made his professional debut with the Utah Grizzlies during the 2015-16 season and spent three seasons in the ECHL between Utah, Indy Fuel, Orlando Solar Bears and Norfolk Admirals.

“Helgy was only with us a short time last season but made a great impression,” said Steelheads Head Coach Everett Sheen. “He’s a player who has been in this league and knows what it’s all about. He can play both forward and D and is a big addition to our team.”

Prior to his professional career Helgesen played four seasons with the Calgary Hitmen (WHL), boasting 130 points (34g, 96a) with 297 penalty minutes and a plus-77 rating through 266 games and serving as team captain during his final year in 2014-15. He was selected 187th overall (7th Round) by the Anaheim Ducks in the 2012 NHL Draft.

The 2020-21 Steelheads roster is now up to nine players including defenseman Evan Wardley, Jeff King, Matt Stief, and Kenton Helgesen as well as forwards A.J. White, Zach Walker, Will Merchant, Colby McCauley, and Kyle Marino. Future announcements and signings will be announced throughout the offseason.
