Boise, ID (10/12/17) – The Idaho Steelheads announced on Thursday that former captain and all-time leading scorer Marty Flichel will be rejoining the organization as a member of the broadcast team this season, serving as a color analyst for Steelheads games on KTIK Radio and on Cable One.
This will be Flichel’s first formal role with the organization since his retirement from the ECHL in 2011. The Steelheads all-time leader in goals, assists, points, games played, and playoff scoring will join Brian McCormack on the broadcast providing in-game commentary and interviews from ice level.
“I haven’t had a regular position in the organization for five years, and I missed being in the arena on a regular basis and seeing a lot of my friends,” said Flichel. “I’m excited to be back.”
“Brian and I have talked during the summer and we have a good rapport. I’m just going to remind myself to keep things simple and wait for my cue.”
McCormack and Flichel worked together on one broadcast last season to promote the Steelheads’ 20th Anniversary Reunion Game.
“Working with Marty last season, even for just one game, was terrific,” said McCormack. “Marty had tremendous success when he played and because of that he is able to recognize situations as they develop and tell you exactly what a player is looking to do. We’re going to be able to do a lot more hockey games together now, and I think we will both learn a lot and have a great time with it.”
Flichel will broadcast as many games as possible while working around his playing schedule with the Sun Valley Suns, as well as his career as a loan officer with Finance of America. In addition to Flichel’s presence, Mark Broz will return to the broadcast this season and rotate with KTVB’s Will Hall, who will also serve as a rink-side analyst for select broadcasts.
“Marty is an all-time great for our organization, and he’s someone who still cares very much about the success of our team,” said Steelheads President Eric Trapp. “Having him on our broadcasts and around our players is going to mean a lot for our fans.”
The Steelheads will once again have all home games broadcast on Cable One, and all 72 regular-season games will be heard on KTIK Radio with the majority broadcast on 1350AM. Flichel’s first game will be on Opening Night this Friday, when the Steelheads host the Norfolk Admirals at CenturyLink Arena. Puck-drop is scheduled for 7:10pm.
