The Steelheads summer transaction list has been characterized by a bevy of returning defensemen, but one of the team’s most important acquisitions may be a new blue-liner with strong offensive credentials. Cody Corbett made a big impact with the South Carolina Stingrays during their trip to a Kelly Cup Final last spring, and now he plan to put up numbers from the point in Boise.
Let’s look at the numbers for the newest Idaho D-man:
4 – Corbett was a force in the post-season, his nine points ranked ninth among ECHL defensemen in the playoffs. He played a particularly large role in getting the Stingrays into the Kelly Cup Final, with four points against the Manchester Monarchs in the seven-game Eastern Conference Final. Corbett had a goal and an assist in Game 3, and he set up the game-winner in Game 5.
11 – Though he spent a solid chunk of the regular season in the AHL, Corbett was a solid producer when he was in the ECHL, putting up 11 points in 18 games. Corbett five points in seven games with Colorado earlier in the season, and six points in 11 games after joining South Carolina via trade later in the season. Four of those points – three goals and an assist – came on the power play.
6 – Corbett put up respectable numbers in his time in the AHL, recording ten points in 23 games with San Antonio last season. His strongest stretch was a six-game swing in December, when he posted two goals and four assists from December 12th to December 27th. Cody has 25 points (8-17-25) in 93 career AHL games.
61 – Corbett’s success in juniors is well-documented, winning two WHL championships and a Memorial Cup in 2014. That 2014 season was his best, when he had 17 goals and 61 points in 65 regular season games, not to mention 13 points in the playoffs and six points in five Memorial Cup games. He finished sixth in scoring that year among WHL defensemen.
4 – Corbett has never gone more than four games without recording at least a point in his ECHL career.
2.87 – You don’t get points as a defenseman without getting pucks to the net, and one of the tools Head Coach Neil Graham has praised in Corbett is his heavy shot from the point. Cody has averaged 2.87 shots per game over the course of his ECHL career.
