Boise, ID (8/10/17) – Steelheads Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Neil Graham announced on Thursday that the Steelheads have completed a trade with the Greenville Swamp Rabbits, acquiring forward Tommy Thompson in exchange for the rights to forward Joe Basaraba. Thompson has signed an ECHL contract with the Steelheads for the 2017-18 season.

Thompson, 26, finished his rookie season with the Swamp Rabbits in 2016-17 with 16 goals and 33 points in 58 games, also appearing in all six playoff games for the Swamp Rabbits. The Londonderry, New Hampshire native also played in three games in the American Hockey League with the Hartford Wolf Pack. Thompson’s 16 goals were tied for sixth most on the team last year, and his 33 points ranked third among Greenville rookies.

“I’m really excited for this new opportunity and to play for a well-respected and community-oriented organization like Idaho,” said Thompson. “Entering my second pro season, I know what’s going to be expected from me every night to help our team win games. I’m excited for the season to start.”

The 6-foot-1 forward did some of his best work late in games. His five game-winning goals led the Swamp Rabbits last season, while his four overtime tallies led the league. Thompson had six multi-point games last season and had his best offensive stretch from January 15th to February 1st. Thompson enjoyed a seven-game points streak during that stretch, totaling six goals and 11 points to go along with two three-point performances.

“Tommy is a high-character, 200-foot player that will fit in well with our group,” said Graham. “He’s going to add a dynamic element with his pull-away speed and quick shot.”

Thompson also played eight games with Greenville and scored two goals following his senior season at St. Lawrence University in 2016. In 69 career professional games, Thompson has 18 goals, 35 points, and 36 penalty minutes.

Prior to turning pro, Thompson played four seasons at St. Lawrence between 2011 and 2016, serving as an assistant captain in his senior season. In 141 college games, Thompson had 26 goals and 57 points.

Basaraba, 25, leaves Idaho after two seasons. He scored 33 goals and recorded 78 points in 119 regular season games for the Steelheads.

“It’s always tough to move a player like Joe Basaraba,” said Graham. “I have built a close relationship with Joe over the past two seasons and wish him nothing but success in the future.”

Thompson joins five other forwards on Idaho’s current roster, which includes Jefferson Dahl, Will Merchant, Connor Chatham, Brady Brassart, and the recently acquired Steven McParland. Defensemen Joe Faust and Corbin Baldwin are under contract on the blue line.
