BOISE, ID (6/29/15) – The ECHL announced Thursday during the 2015 League meetings in Las Vegas, Nevada, that Idaho Steelheads Director of Media and Community Relations, Will Hoenike, was awarded Broadcaster of the Year for the 2014-15 season.
Hoenike was one of five broadcasters nominated within the 28-team league. It is his first time receiving the award but the third time a Steelheads' play-by-play broadcaster has been honored. Joe O'Donnell (2007) and Doug Plagens (2010) also received accolades during their stints in Idaho.
A native of Washington and a graduate from Washington State University, Hoenike moved to Idaho in 1997 where he started his career as a sports anchor for KIVI-TV Channel 6. Nearly a decade later, he joined the Idaho Steelheads’ staff as director of season ticket relations. Midway through 2009, Hoenike shifted into the public relations department where he stands today. By January of 2012, he continued to grow within the organization, taking on the additional task of being the team’s full-time broadcaster.
“We’re proud of Will’s accomplishment,” says Idaho Steelheads President Eric Trapp. “He’s a great representation of the Steelheads and all of our fans thoroughly enjoy his unique brand of announcing. We’re lucky to have him.”
Hoenike and the team start off the 2015-16 season at CenturyLink Arena in Boise on Friday and Saturday, October 16 and 17, hosting the Rapid City Rush. CLICK HERE for the full 2015-16 schedule.
