Ontario, CA (10/25/14) – Gaelan Patterson notched his first two goals of the season and Olivier Roy turned aside 20 of 21 shots on Saturday night as the Idaho Steelheads put together an impressive, 4-1 win at Ontario.
With the win, Idaho improves to 3-1 on the season as the team heads home for three games next week against the Stockton Thunder. Tickets to the games, on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, are all available by logging on to idahosteelheads.com.
For the fourth straight game, Idaho drew first blood when Ludwig Karlsson fed a pass across the top of the crease to Jesse Root. Root reached around Ontario netminder Joe Cannata for his first goal of the season at 3:18 to take a 1-0 lead. The lead grew on Jason Bast's team-leading third goal of the season as he ripped a shot from the left-wing circle over Cannata's shoulder at 12:50 to finish a two-on-one rush.
Idaho would extend the lead to 3-0 on Patterson's first of the night as he zinged a shot from the left wing just inside the right-wing post at the 5:07 mark of the second period, assisted by Patrick Cullity and Colton Beck. Beck's assist extended his season-opening point streak to four straight games. Ontario inched back when Rocco Carzo deflected a Matt Register point shot past Roy three minutes later. The Reign would push for more, but a shot off a post and a brilliant Roy save on a redirection in tight kept Idaho on top, 3-1, through two periods.
Patterson (pictured, right) came up with a critical insurance goal eight minutes into the third period as he found himself all alone in the slot and ripped a wrister into the net, assisted by Steve Quailer and Alex Belzile, to give Idaho a 4-1 lead.
Roy improved his personal record to 3-0, making several big saves in the intense, hard-fought road win. Cannata took his first loss of the season, stopping 21 of 25 shots as Idaho out-shot Ontario, 25-21. Idaho's power play came up empty on four attempts but, more importantly, the Steelheads did not give Ontario a single power-play opportunity all night.
The Steelheads return home on Wednesday, October 29, for Dollar Beer Night, presented by Bud Light, against the Stockton Thunder. Puck drops at 7:10 PM and tickets are available by calling the CenturyLink Arena box office at 208-331-8497
