Steelheads add Pereira to roster

(Boise, ID) - Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Hardy Sauter announced Thursday morning that the Idaho Steelheads have acquired forward Joe Pereira via waivers from the South Carolina Stingrays.Pereira, 24, is scheduled to join the team in time for its game Friday night at Las Vegas.In a corresponding roster move, rookie forward Mike Hellyer was released by the team.Pereira is in his first full season out of Boston University. The West Haven, Connecticut, product served as team captain as a senior when he led the squad with 15 goals. He was also a member of BU's NCAA National Championship team in 2009.He made his professional debut in March 2011, playing in 11 games in the American Hockey League with the Worcester Sharks and Bridgeport Sound Tigers. He spent most of this season with the ECHL's South Carolina Stingrays, shifting back and forth between forward and defense, before being picked up by the Steelheads.The Steelheads return home next week for the final three games of the regular season, hosting the Stockton Thunder on Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday.
