Another case of heart-Burn for Boise

The Boise Burn erased a 20 point deficit, but fell short once again as the Spokane Shock make it 8 straight over the Burn with 56-51 in front of 4,654 fans at Qwest Arena. With the win he Shock improved to a league best 15-1 and will take the top seed into the 2009 playoffs. Spokane looked to make it a laugher early as they outscored Boise 27-7 in the first quarter. Charles Dillon started the scoring with a 3 yard just 2 minutes into the game giving the Shock the early 7-0 lead. On the ensuing kick off, Jomo Wilson getting the call on kick off (Terrance Sanders did not play) answered right away, taking the kick off 55 yards for the score tying the game up at 7. Spokane would then go on a 20-0 run highlighted by a net fumble recovery by Sergio Gilliam and Charles Dillon 3 yard TD from Nick Davila. Alex Guerrero would snap the run in the second quarter with his 4th TD of the year (5 yards) getting Boise within 14 and a Ben Scott 28 yard field goal cut the lead to 11. Davila (Russell athletic Offensive Player of the Game) would increase the lead to 17 finding Markee white for the 3rd time in the half (7 yards). Taylor Tharp cut the deficit to 10 on his 3 yard TD run but Brian Jackson?s 34 yard field goal as time expired in the half gave his team the 36-23 lead going into the break. Jomo Wilson electrified the crowd on the opening kickoff of the 3rd quarter, racing 56 yards down the sidelines for his second return TD of the night getting Boise to within 6, but on the ensuing kickoff it was Virgil gray?s turn as he returned the Ben Scott kick 57 yards for the score and the 43-30 lead. Things appeared south for Boise when starting quarterback Taylor Tharp went down with a shoulder injury, but rookie Mark Thorson answered the call connecting with Jomo Wilson on a 4th and long on his first series of the night resulting in a 26 yard TD and getting Boise back to within 6 at 43-37. Down 50-37 in the 4th, Boise came out gunning for the league?s top team. Thorson threw TD passes to Casey Allen (18 yards) and Jomo Wilson (8 yards) giving the Burn their first lead of the game at 51-50. But it was Nick Davila?s 2 yard 4th down TD pass to Andy Olson which was the game winner. Kevin McCullough intercepted Mark Thorson on 4th down and goal and the Shock escaped with the 5 point win 56-51. The Burn now prepare for the post season as they will host the Arkansas Twisters in the opening round of the post-season next Saturday, August 1st at Qwest Arena.
