Faced with a must win situation and a playoff berth on the line, Boise Burn head coach Lee Leslie has received a boost on offense and defense. Today the arenafootball2 league office announced that a trio of big time players, led by former Boise State Defensive tackle Alex Guerrero, will suit up for the Burn. Guerrero, a staple on the Bronco Defense from 2002-2005, was a key part in one of the most successful era?s in Boise State history. During Guerrero?s tenure with BSU, the Broncos compiled a 45-7 record and won two bowl games. Following his collegiate career, Guerrero signed a free agent contract with the Minnesota Vikings where he played on the practice squad in 2006. He also spent time that year in the Seattle Seahawks? and Kansas City Chiefs? camps. In 2007, Guerrero was assigned to the Rhein Fire of the NFL Europe League. He was signed by the Hamilton Tiger Cats (CFL) this season, but was released following training camp. In addition to Guerrero, the Burn have also acquired former California Golden Bear linebacker Mickey Pimentel and former Utah Ute wide receiver Derrek Richards. Pimentel, a two-year letterman at Cal, earned a starting spot on the Golden Bears defense his senior year, starting the final 10 games of the 2006 campaign. Pimentel recorded 64 tackles (28 solo), 4.5 sacks, 5 break ups and 1 interception in his senior campaign. Pimentel?s interception came against Arizona State where he returned it 20 yards for a TD. In his two seasons at Cal, Pimentel recorded 98 tackles (48 solo) 8 sacks, 8 pass break ups and 3 interceptions. Richards played four years for the Utes from 2004-2007. A teammate of current Burn wide receiver Brian Hernandez, Richards was the Utes leading receiver in 2006 and 2007. As a junior in 2006, Richards recorded career highs in receptions (60) and yards (717) with 6 TD?s. In 2007, Richards was the ?go to? guy once again leading the way with 57 catches for 635 yards and 3 TD?s. Richards received a scholarship following his sophomore year when he earned the starting role at wide receiver in week 7 of the 2005 campaign. The Burn (8-7) kick off against the first place Shock (14-1) in Spokane, Saturday. If Boise wins, they?ll earn a playoff spot. Boise is 0-4 all-time against the Shock. This year, they?re 0-2.• 6/7/08 vs Spokane: L 51-68? 5/10/08 @ Spokane: L 42-62? 6/23/07 @ Spokane: L 28-60? 5/19/07 vs Spokane: L 44-62Catch the Burn?s regular season finale this Saturday, July 26 live on KGEM 1140 AM with Scott Conklin calling the play-by-play.
